How to Move a Shed

If you’re one of the nearly 25 million Americans who will be moving in the next 12 months, you may be wondering how to move a shed if you’re fortunate enough to have one.  Whether you’re moving your shed across town or across the country, Countryside Barns is happy to help out by giving you these five tips on how to move a shed.

1. See if the shed is movable and structurally sound.

If your shed is attached to skids or isn’t attached to a foundation, it can easily be moved to another location. But, before you decide to move it, make sure that it’s not deteriorated or getting to the point where you’re going to need to replace it in a year or two.

2. Decide how you’re going to move your shed.

If you’re going to move the shed yourself, be sure to ask at least three strong friends to help you load it onto a truckbed or trailer. If you decide to hire professional movers, they’ll bring all the necessary equipment and do all of the work for you.

3. Prepare the shed for moving.

Before moving your shed, be sure to empty it first, which will make it much lighter to move and will prevent damage to your shed when it’s being moved. Also, take out all doors and windows from their hinges so they don’t get warped or break when the shed is lifted. Install planks on the shed openings where the doors and windows were to prevent the shed from twisting during the move.

4. Load the shed on the moving vehicle.

When the shed is ready, get the truck or trailer as close to it as possible. If your shed is small, you and your friends may be able to lift it onto the moving vehicle. If the shed is too large to lift and carry manually, you can use a forklift or use several metal or PVC pipes to act as rollers. Use car jacks to lift the shed high enough for the metal pipes to fit under.

5. If possible, prepare the new location of your shed before you move it.

Prepare the foundation your shed will be installed on before you arrive with it. Have concrete poured or concrete blocks or gravel in place to place the shed on. You don’t want to arrive at the new location, unload the shed, prepare the foundation, and have to go through lifting your shed again.

If you’re going to be moving to another state, it’s best to let professionals handle it. And, if you’re going to use a forklift, be sure the operator has been trained on the equipment.

I have two buildings from Countryside Barns on my property. The first one is a lofted garden shed purchased a delivered in 2016. The second is a garage purchased in 2023. The second was originally going to be a small 8’X12’ garden shed. Due to a variance requirement with the city, I was not able to place the small garden shed in the respectable place I selected on my property. Countryside Barns was understanding, I put a halt on the order 6 days after placing it. Thank you, Jessica! I selected a new location on my property and was able to go bigger 14’X32’. I also decided to go with a portable garage vs a garden shed. With a copy of the approved permit and my down payment I signed the contract. With both buildings I have had a few issues but they were taken care of. EDIT: Photos are from months later, they did not install rock, landscaping, gutters, concrete, or electrical.

Both the product and the installation process exceeded all expectations! Everything was done exactly when they said it would be, and the quality of construction is exceptional. Patrick made the delivery and checked leveling very carefully and even took the time to add a couple bumpers to the door and touch up paint on the base or at a tiny scratch from installation. This shed is certainly built to last!
